Feature Overview
SAP has added the ability to assign individual permissions for the Excel Add-in to users and user roles with the SAP Analytics Cloud permissions. This adds security and authorization at the worksheet level. Currently, the only add-in permissions used by SAC are Read and Update, but you can assign all permissions. Create and Delete will be permissions that can be used as a repository for use at a later time.
Designer vs. Viewer
Designer/Update
- Update permission assigned.
- As a designer, you have all permissions: Read and Update.
- You can create report templates, including layout and authorized changes, and update workbooks with all analysis functions (e.g., filtering and sorting).
- Planning is enabled by default.
Viewer/Read
- Only the Read permission is assigned.
- Can view existing workbooks and can only change the display options for a dimension, the number format, or execute existing planning triggers. Remember, planning is disabled by default; users will not be able to publish any changes.
- If you create a new workbook, all analysis functions are enabled for this workbook, but planning is disabled by default.
- SAC add-in cannot influence the right to store workbooks on a local PC. Everyone can save workbooks locally.
- Saving workbooks to an SAC tenant is not yet possible. SAP is working on this as a possible enhancement in 2024.
Permissions Granted via Excel Workbook rather than User Roles in SAC
Designers may give some types or all permissions in the workbook and not need to update the User role.
- In the filter dialog for a dimension, you can choose More Options > Allow viewers to modify selections to allow viewers to change the filter for this dimension.
- You can enable a model for planning in the designer panel: Choose Planning Enabled in the context menu for the model in the designer panel. Then, users with Read permission can plan for this model in this workbook.
- In the workbook preferences, you can set the setting Workbook Permissions to the option All users have designer rights to give all users designer rights for this workbook. This also includes planning.
